Aimee Mullens: The Opportunity of Adversity

TED Talks: The thesaurus might equate “disabled” with synonyms like “useless” and “mutilated,” but ground-breaking runner Aimee Mullins is out to redefine the word.

Thanks to a visit to Updates on Lewis Jack I found this awesome video. I found myself both crying and smiling throughout the inspiring talk. She talks about the sad Thesaurus definitions of ‘disability’ (which made me cry) and the stories of the people in her life that encouraged her to become the woman she is today. As well as her own will to succeed.

‘There is no normal. There is typical. There is common. But there is no normal. Why do we try to fit into something that doesn’t exist.’ Aimee Mullens

There are many gems in the 20 minutes that she spoke, I’d write them all, but I’d rather you hear what she has to say yourself.

  1. I love her! She actually came to speak at a fundraiser in our city for an organization that helps fund alternative treatments for people with various challenges. I was hell-bent on going, and it was AWESOME! Love her!
